Dermaplaning at Home with a Straight Razor – Demo

Dermaplaning is an exfoliation technique which reveals radiant skin by removing dead skin cells and fine facial hair. This is a treatment done by professionals, but you can also do it at home with a straight razor or safer alternatives. I’ll share my updated recommendations below. (This post was updated May of 2024.)

Dermaplaning with a Straight Razor

Straight Razor for Dermaplaning

Straight Razor

I originally posted this in 2019, after dermaplaning for two years. Back then I preferred using a straight razor when dermaplaning. I did this because the dermaplaning tools available at the time were not very good and were not sharp enough to give me good results. This have changed since then and I’ll share a variety of options with you.

Disclaimer

Whichever tool you decide to use, please do your own research and be careful. If you do use a straight razor or other tool, it is at your own risk and discretion because you can easily cut yourself with this type of tool. If you were to get this treatment done at a clinic, they would use a sharp surgical tool or scalpel, which can also pose certain risks.

My Experience

Years ago I preferred using a straight razor for this treatment because it provided me with better results due to the sharpness of the blade. If the tool you’re using isn’t sharp enough, it can drag on the skin and cause some irritation. Please take a look at my dermaplaning video to see my treatment process.

Steps I Use to Dermplane at Home

  • First, wash my face and do not apply oils or moisturizer. Wash hands and disinfect the straight razor with high concentration alcohol. Have a cotton round on hand, to wipe stuff onto.
  • I pull my hair up into a super high, very tight pony tail. I hold my skin tight with one hand, while I begin working with the straight razor in the other hand.
  • I begin the Dermaplaning by starting at my forehead and gently, carefully scraping downward to the eyebrows. I just continue that process very methodically and carefully until all the face is done. If the razor is dull, I change it out. If there are areas I miss, I will use a handheld shaving tool to get that area.
  • Afterwards, if my skin is a little bit sensitive, I sometimes wait 20 minutes before doing this. Then, I will put hyaluronic serum and also avocado oil onto my face. The oil is extremely soothing and the serum is extremely good for my skin. Both are great for dry skin.

Honest Thoughts

Benefits

In brief, I find that my skin is incredibly smooth after Dermaplaning. Dermaplaning is essentially face shaving, and exfoliating away dead skin. It ends up making your skin soft, supple and open to receiving products (if you use serums, lotions, etc.). My skin usually looks brighter the next day and more radiant. This doesn’t last forever, but the hair does stay away for quite a while.

Negatives

Sometimes my skin is left dry and a bit irritated afterwards, even though I don’t have sensitive skin at all. I find that if you use a handheld face razor like the one I show in the video (black one), you can get comparable results. I think it feels better to use a Dermaplaning razor to get the hair off around the sides near the ears, usually where people have the most “peach fuzz,” but besides that, I think using a face razor like I showed in the video, actually works really well and leaves the skin feeling super exfoliated too.

Favorite Method

Personally, I love using this straight razor in combination with the face razor from the video, to clean up any and all hair on my face. I don’t do that often, but if I plan on going to something where I want to try to look good, with super clear skin, I will Dermaplane and use the black razor. Then, I will also pluck the eyebrows too.

Recommendations

Straight Razors

The straight razor I am using in the video was purchased in 2015. I think there are higher quality products available today. So, I have some Amazon recommendations. So many of the options on Amazon look a bit intimidating. There are a variety of straight razors available here. I haven’t purchased one since 2015, so I recommend checking out the links and reviews on Amazon. I do have one recommendation though, which is the Tweezerman Facial Razor.

Tweezerman Facial Razor $15 I haven’t used this one yet, but it looks like the perfect mix between safety+straight razor for dermaplaning. It’s highly rated. I’m very interested in purchasing this one next!

Dermaplaning Tools

Kitsch Dermaplaning Tools (Pack of 12) for $9

This is a great set of dermaplaning blades or tools, which are safe to use and effective at getting rid of the peach fuzz and dead skin. This is highly rated on Amazon, for good reason!

Shick Hydro Silk Dermaplaning Tools (Pack of 3) for $6

Another excellent option, providing you with effective tools for getting smoother skin. This one is also very highly rated.

Alternative to Dermaplaning

Korean Exfoliating Mitts
These are super affordable and major skin game-changers for me. If using on the face like I do, please be careful the first time, until you know how your face handles it. To me, it makes my skin as soft as if I had done a full blown glycolic face peel. If you aren’t interested in Dermaplaning but want incredible skin, this is a great alternative for an incredible exfoliation treatment.

Great video! I used to pay for dermaplanning and then decided to try the facial razors. They do an ok job, obviously not as well as someone else doing it with a scalpel, but I dont love how wasteful they are. I’m looking into using a straight razor as the blades are so much more economical and eco friendly. Do you not recommend the straight razor over all, or just not for those just trying out dernaplanning.
