Beauty Youtubers, Skin Filters & Fake Perfection

Just a short post here, as I wanted to express my feelings on this topic. I understand how transformative good lighting can be. It can make a person look incredible in front of the camera, in photos or videos. On the other hand, bad lighting can make you look way worse than you really do in real life. I’ve been online for a while. I get it. When it comes to youtubers making videos, people can be very complimentary in the comments – telling you how flawless you look and young. Well, the truth is that many major beauty youtubers are using blurring filters, editing as well as other lighting arrangements, to make themselves look flawless. Many of you know that already though. Anyone else annoyed by it at this point?

I’m not here to complain, but I am here to express myself right now. I am sick of the major beauty youtubers out there who wouldn’t dare allow you to see that they actually have pores on their skin. You start to wonder how it is possible the person has skin with no pores or lines. Besides this, many major beauty youtubers become so accustomed to this fake level of perfection, that they end up having lots of botox and fillers to try to make themselves look the way they look on camera. But, I think it’s not possible. And, to each their own, when it comes to those things. I’m trying to look younger and slow down aging too, so I am not judging. But, it can become a toxic cycle of deception, in my opinion.

I have just recently started up this youtube channel of mine, Life & DIY, and on it you will see that I will share some extreme closeups in certain videos. I will share them on this website as well. I am not extremely comfortable in doing so, but I am ok with it. And, the more I do it, the more it won’t bother me. It is freeing anyway, to be real. I would rather have people see real imperfect skin with some lines and sun spots and blotchiness and big old pores, than some fake filtered out blurred perfect version of it. I want to be real because I am sick of the perception of perfection with beauty youtubers.

I want to also be able to genuinely, honestly share before and after and progress photos and videos of different skincare procedures, so it may help you if you’re thinking of trying it out. Please keep one thing in mind though. My camera takes insanely high resolution photos and videos. If you take photos of yourself, please keep this in mind as well, for your own well-being. Also, if you’ve ever used a close-up mirror, the same thing applies. Most people will view your skin from a few or more feet away. Most people won’t see your skin up close to the level that the zoomed in mirror, or zoomed in camera will portray. So, most people don’t look so bad, but they may feel bad about themselves if looking in a super close-up mirror or super-closeup high resolution photos. Please, please keep this in mind. These horrible things can play tricks on the mind. In a similar way, watching beauty gurus on youtube for many years, can also play tricks on the mind. It is confusing for young people, especially, because the level of perfection is never attainable in real life.

How do you feel about beauty youtubers who never allow you to see that they actually have real human skin? :) Please share thoughts in the comments below!

So refreshing! I’ve started watching a lot of beauty YouTube videos in the past year as I’ve been looking for products and procedures to help with recent acne + acne scars! So many do cover up what their skin looks like and they keep pushing products without providing real / genuine reviews. It all seemed so helpful at first, but after a bit I began to stop watching as it didn’t seem like I could trust their recommendations. For example, how could they form an opinion on a product after only trying it a couple times or after incorporating it… Read more »

The more natural bloggers, the better… it is time we get real again and stop this fake “perfection” madness :) Interesting example: I spend a little time in India and got to know some Indian ladies who mentioned they watch makeup video’s to get inspired for their wedding makeup. The comments I received was that these YouTubers use so many products and wear so much makeup… My response was “They are simply selling themselves and products, do not view them as the average westerners. Do I use a lot of makeup?” So interesting how these “ideals” get spread with today’s… Read more »
