Does Rogaine Work for a Receding Hairline?

Can Rogaine regrow a receding hairline? I’ve heard doctors say that it doesn’t work well for hair thinning along the hairline. And, it’s not FDA-approved for that use. The products are marketed for men with crown thinning and for women with diffuse hair loss on the top of the scalp.

Past Experiments Using Rogaine for Hairline Growth

But, as you can see from the photos, I’ve had significant growth along the hairline by using Rogaine. Those before and after results are from a previous experiment. If you want to see the full breakdown and timeline, I shared everything in this post. I didn’t apply as much or as often as people typically apply, yet I had strong results. I’m sure everyone will have different experiences, but that’s why I’m here to share mine. So if this is something you’re interested in trying, you can see that it’s worked well for me.

Before My Rogaine Experiments

This is what my hairline looked like before the experiments. It wasn’t a huge issue, but I had some thinning along the front that I started noticing more over time. It could’ve been from wearing my hair up too tight, or maybe it was something else entirely. Other than that my hair is very thick. That image here was taken from a video I posted about my first Rogaine experiment. You can watch it here: Rogaine Before & Afters.

The receding hairline or thinning wasn’t something I felt super insecure about—but I was curious. And the more I looked into it, the more I wanted to see what would actually happen if I tried Rogaine.

Most people use it the way the box tells them to. I didn’t. I wanted to see what would happen if I applied it differently, in smaller amounts, and less often.

So that’s what I did—and that’s what led to all these experiments.

Experiment #1: Daily Rogaine with Q-tip Application (Nov 2023 – Aug 2024)

📅 Nov 8, 2023 — I started applying 2% liquid Rogaine  5x a week at night using a a-tip. Very minimal—just dabbed right along the hairline.

After about a month, I noticed hair growing in. Also at one month I noticed the areas that were originally most sparse, underwent shedding. So, I did lose some hair in the area that was already sparse and this is normal. Some people get really worried about this, but new hair will grow in there.

📅 Jan 2024 — At the 2-month mark, I saw definite and excessive new growth right where I had applied it.

📅 Feb 15, 2024 — I scaled back to using it just 2–3x a week. On the off days, I used a rosemary & peppermint essential oil blend and occasionally nano-needled.

📅 April 2, 2024 — I stopped Rogaine completely and stuck with essential oils only, 5x per week.

📅 Aug 2024 — I quit using everything. No more oils. No more Rogaine.

The reason I never filmed a proper update video was because the new hair growth that I had blended in with my hair. It grew so long that I could no longer find it and distinguish where the growth was from my layers of hair. Long after totally stopping the use of Rogaine and essential oils, I think I did lose some of the gains I had but I think I kept some as well. My hairline never really looked as bad as it did prior to the experiment.

Final Thoughts & Warning

This wasn’t a sponsored test. I paid for everything myself, and I didn’t have any expectations when I started. I remember seeing Rogaine commercials as a kid and assuming it was all fake or a scam. I definitely don’t feel that way anymore. It’s a strong treatment—and in my experience, it’s something worth trying.

Important note: Rogaine (minoxidil) is extremely toxic—and potentially deadly—for cats and dogs. If you have pets, keep it far out of reach, and don’t let them lick your scalp or hair if you’ve applied it.

Some people have also raised concerns about possible side effects, like accelerated aging on the face. I haven’t seen that happen myself, but I’ve heard it enough times that I’ve taken it into consideration. It’s one of the reasons I try to use as little as possible, just enough to be effective.

If you’re looking for a more natural approach, things like scalp massage or red light therapy might help by increasing blood flow to the follicles. Another treatment that is said to be quite effective is microneedling or derma rolling the scalp.

If you’ve ever tried Rogaine, please share your experiences with it. I’d love to hear if it worked for you.

Name Brand or Generic Rogaine – What I Use

I don’t think it matters if you use a generic or name brand version of Rogaine. I bought mine in a 3-pack off of Amazon in 2023 and still haven’t used it all up yet.

This is the Rogaine I purchased. I think buying in bulk is cheaper if you’re going to use all of the bottles. If you aren’t sure, it might be best to start with just one though it depends on the price. I just found an Amazon brand version of it that’s way cheaper for the 3 pack! Here is their 2% minoxidil and if it were me, I’d get this one since the price is so much better.

If you’re a guy, you’ll need the men’s version which is 5% minoxidil.
