Dermarollers vs. Motorized Pens vs. Stamps

If you’re totally new to microneedling, there are basically three options:

1. Dermarollers are the cheapest option. But some people have concerns with tearing the skin when dragging needles across the face.
2. Motorized pens, like the Dr. Pen, offer more control and precision, and can go deeper. But, some people are fearful of doing this at home.
3. Stamping devices are a great beginner option. There’s no dragging, and it’s a quick, simple treatment.

The Bio Pen 6

This is a microneedling stamping device with 140 microneedles, red and blue LED light therapy, EMS microcurrent, and a vibration function built in. It comes with two 0.5mm cartridges to start.

The BioPen6 is heavily marketed for hair growth, but I think it’s also really beneficial for anyone who’s intimidated by microneedling with a Dr. Pen and wants an easy, low-risk way to start on the face too.

At 0.5mm, you’re working with a depth a lot of dermatologists actually say is enough to see some real results. I would recommend starting with either 0.25mm or 0.5mm if you’re new to microneedling at home.

The red and blue light and the vibration are extra features on top of the needling itself. Red light is meant to support collagen and circulation, and blue light is meant to help calm the skin. The main thing doing the actual work is the needling.

Why I Like Using This for Cosmetic Microneedling & Hair Growth

Cosmetic microneedling can have a ton of benefits, from improving skin tone and texture, to reducing the appearance of pores, to some fine lines and wrinkles. There’s also one benefit to using a less intense device like this, you can use a variety of skincare ingredients, as long as your skin isn’t too sensitive to them, and it greatly improves product absorption.

There are a lot of advanced topicals out there, but the skin barrier prevents much of the product from getting deeper into the layers of your skin. Using a stamp device like this creates really small channels, letting the product go deeper.

This is ideal for those of us who are reluctant to use a variety of ingredients while microneedling at home with a Dr. Pen. Pens create much deeper channels than a stamping tool, so there’s more risk. With the Dr. Pen, I tend to stick with pure hyaluronic acid or distilled water. That’s just me using an abundance of caution, I know many clinics use active ingredients or peptides right after needling, but I’m more comfortable doing that after derma stamping.

How I Use It

For a simple stamping treatment, I start with clean skin, I wash my face and then clean it with a toner. Before using the cartridge, I sanitize it in 70% isopropyl alcohol for about 10 minutes.

Then I apply a thin layer of a hydrating serum before I begin stamping, this helps the device glide instead of catching on dry skin. I stamp across my face in sections, with light, even pressure, reapplying serum if my skin starts feeling dry, and again once I’m done.

For frequency, once a week is a good starting point at a depth of 0.25mm, since it’s shallow enough that your skin isn’t dealing with the longer recovery time a deeper treatment needs. I’d avoid anything with strong actives like vitamin C or retinol for a couple of days afterward while your skin settles.

What I’ve Noticed

These needles are noticeably sharper than what I’m used to with a dermaroller, and they go in a lot more easily.

I noticed that it wasn’t very painful or uncomfortable on most of my face, but it was a bit more challenging on the forehead. The hairline was easy with no discomfort and I could have used a deeper needling cartridge there.

By the end, my skin was a bit red, which is pretty normal and it returned to normal within two hours. Some people are sensitive to using serums during these treatments, you could always use a spray bottle with water instead, or a pure hyaluronic acid serum, which many people don’t have issues with. Overall, this was a noticeably better experience than using a derma roller. I also own the Banish roller, and found these cartridge needles sharper by comparison.
